A Day of Hiking and Cherry Picking in Pretzfeld: Exploring the Fränkische Schweiz

Discover the natural beauty of the Fränkische Schweiz by embarking on a delightful hike around Pretzfeld. This picturesque journey takes you through charming landscapes, lush orchards where the temptation to pick a few cherries fresh from the trees along the way is irresistible. You can finish this nimble little hike with a refreshing drink at the beer garden, either sitting at tables dispersed among the trees or on the terrace overlooking the picturesque valley below. Read on to learn more about this memorable excursion and how it showcases the essence of Franconia’s countryside.

Setting off on the Hike

For our adventure we selected a weekend at the beginning of July, this being the height of the growing season when the trees are full of ripe luscious cherries. We began by taking the RE19 train from Nuremberg, changing at Forchheim to the RB22 service and departing the train at Pretzfeld. The 45 minute train journey itself offers glimpses of the scenic countryside, building anticipation for the hike ahead. On arrival at Pretzfeld, we embarked on an easy-going 10km hike, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of the Fränkische Schweiz. We found it better to first walk along the valley among the orchards before rising into the forest (actually the opposite way around as suggested by the Komoot App).

Enchanting Orchards and Cherry Picking

Leaving Pretzfeld and meandering through the countryside, we arrived at the picturesque orchards adorned with ripe cherries and a variety of fruit trees. The trees laden with rich, dark red cherries were a delight to see. Plucking a few cherries straight from the branches, we relished the juicy freshness and vibrant sweetness. While cherries stole the show, we couldn’t help but notice the apple and pear trees patiently waiting for their time to shine in the coming season.

The Beer Garden

Near the end of our hike, we arrived at the beer garden, a haven of relaxation and refreshment. Nestled on a hilltop, the beer garden offered panoramic views of the picturesque valley below, rewarding our effort with a serene and idyllic setting. We could savour beers or other refreshing drinks and indulge in traditional Franconian cuisine, recharging our batteries amidst the tranquil surroundings.

Return to Nuremberg:

Our thirst and appetites satisfied and our spirits refreshed, we concluded our adventure returning to Nuremberg at 5pm. Our hike through the Fränkische Schweiz, tasting fresh cherries along the way, was an invigorating experience, leaving us ready to unwind and recharge before enjoying the rest of the weekend.
