In the international breast cancer month of October, the Women and Health Working Group in Nuremberg are organising, for the first time, a series of events on the subject of breast health. Under the motto “Breast – Desire – Health” a wide range of events for women of all ages will be held from October to the beginning of November 2020. The working group is a network in which the Women’s Representative of the City of Nuremberg and various women’s organisations and advice centres in Nuremberg work together.

Every year, around 75,000 women in Germany are diagnosed with breast cancer. This makes breast cancer the most common malignant tumour in women. About 17,000 patients die from the consequences. “The current figures from the German Cancer Society show that the topic has not lost any of its urgency: At present, on average one in eight women will develop breast cancer in the course of their lives,” says Hedwig Schouten, Commissioner for Women and Equality of the City of Nuremberg. If breast cancer is detected early, the chances of recovery are usually good.

The Frauen & Mädchen Gesundheitszentrum Nürnberg (FMGZ), Fürther Straße 154, rear building, will open the series of events on Tuesday, 6 October 2020 at 7pm with the topic “Breast Health”. The evening everything will revolve around breast, lust and health. Admission costs 15 euros, concessions 12 euros. On Tuesday, 13 October, also at 7 pm at the FMGZ, everything will revolve around the opportunities and risks of mammography screening under the motto “To screen or not to screen? Admission costs 10 euros, concessions 8 euros. Please register online at www.fmgz-nuernberg.de.

The BRCA Netzwerk e.V. – Hilfe bei familiären Krebserkrankungen – Gesprächskreis Nürnberg will offer a digital exchange for people affected by familial breast and ovarian cancer on Tuesday, 13 October at 7 pm. Participation in the online event is free of charge, registration by e-mail to gk-nuernberg@brca-netzwerk.de is required.

On Wednesday, 28 October, at 7 pm, the FMGZ Nuremberg, Fürther Straße 154, rear building, will be discussing breast views under the motto “Too big, too small – real, shaped – right, wrong”. There will be room for personal, political and feminist issues in the workshop. Admission costs 15 euros, reduced rate 12 euros. Registration is requested online at www.fmgz-nuernberg.de.

Under the title “Diagnose Krebs – Krisensituation für Betroffene und ihre Familien und den Freundeskreis” (Cancer Diagnosis – Crisis Situations for Afflicted, their Families and Friends), the Bavarian Cancer Society and Kiss Nürnberg-Fürth-Erlangen are offering a discussion group for people suffering from cancer, their relatives and friends with experts such as doctors and psycho-oncologists on Thursday, 5 November from 5-7pm. Admission is free, registration by email to nuernberg@kiss-mfr.de is required. The venue is the Bavarian Cancer Society, Marientorgraben 13.

Corona safety and hygiene regulations are guaranteed for all events.

October has been declared the international breast cancer month, during which every year the prevention, research and treatment of breast cancer is to be brought to public attention. Actions are held worldwide to raise awareness of this disease. The colour pink, which can also be found in the logo of the German screening programme, and the pink ribbon symbolise the disease.
