Liz Bayerlein’s Acrylic Painting Exhibition Explores the Realm of Perception

Acclaimed artist Liz Bayerlein presents her captivating exhibition, “Sein oder Schein” (To Be or To Appear), showcasing her profound exploration of the human figure and the expressive power of colour. The exhibition, which began on June 3 and will run until July 1, offers a unique perspective on the interplay between reality and illusion.

Bayerlein’s artistry centres around the human form, with a distinctive focus on the expressive potential of color. Her oeuvre encompasses various series, each serving as a canvas for societal reflections and projections. Notably, the “Nummernbilder” series stands out, featuring works that were not painted from live models but were inspired by a glossy catalog of exclusive lingerie. These pieces delve into the concept of timeless beauty, inviting contemplation on the subject.

Throughout her career, Bayerlein has constantly explored different themes and contexts. In response to the prevailing pandemic gloom of 2020 and 2021, her works offer glimpses of yearning, such as “nach Corona” (after Corona) and “good-looking,” providing a stark contrast to the somber reality. Another thought-provoking piece, “good morning,” painted at the onset of the Ukrainian conflict in 2022, portrays a woman adorned with a blue (mourning) ring and surrounded by a sharply tapered red flower. It symbolizes profound chaos, loss, and the looming threat of war.

Bayerlein’s latest creations, including “Illusion oder Fiktion” (Illusion or Fiction), “Welt am Draht” (World on a Wire), “Ikone” (Icon), “Simulacrum,” and “nothing but the same,” delve into the complex realm of reality perception. These works prompt contemplation on the frameworks, beliefs, and rules that shape individual and collective worldviews. They explore the limitations imposed on human thinking and the extent to which these constraints define our existence. In the age of the 21st century, where the boundaries between reality and virtuality blur, Bayerlein’s artwork offers a visual discourse on the matrix in which we live.

The exhibition captivates viewers with its distinctive symbolism, featuring cage-like structures and permeable grids that visually represent the questions raised about the nature of reality and perception.

Art enthusiasts are invited to explore Liz Bayerlein’s thought-provoking exhibition, “Sein oder Schein,” at the designated venue. The Vernissage was held on June 3, and a special artist talk, featuring Daniel Bartmeyer in conversation with Liz Bayerlein, is scheduled for July 1st at 5pm.
